It Is Time: The Lion King 30th Anniversary
The Royal Albert Hall will host a landmark event to celebrate the 30th anniversary of an all-time favourite Disney classic, The Lion King. In two special in-concert screenings this July, the iconic animated film will appear amidst concerts and a special performance from the Tony Award-winning musical.
Celebrating 25 years of the stage phenomenon, cast members from the West End will perform an anticipated number featuring The Lion King’s award-winning costumes and puppetry. If you’ve ever seen the production, you’ll know that on top of sonic excellence, the visual immersion of the show is a moment of magic that you’ll not want to miss. On opening night, there will even be a special fashion moment in collaboration with a French luxury house.
The unique concert will celebrate the timeless story of The Lion King and its 30 year evolution - from its beginnings as an animated 1994 film, to the 1998 Tony Award-winning Broadway musical, to 2019’s live-action film, to the present prequel film Mufasa: The Lion King, starring the voices of Seth Rogan, Beyonce and Blue Ivy Carter, and Donald Glover to name a few.
In this family classic, Walt Disney Studios brings to life an animated tale that journeys to the heart of the African savanna. Simba, a future king, is born; he idolises his father, King Mufasa, and in cub-like stride pounces towards his own royal destiny. Faced with adversity from Scar, Mufasa’s brother — and former heir to the throne — the tension to rule over Pride Rock and ‘everything the light touches’ is fraught with tragedy. As Simba becomes exiled, his redeeming return home is uplifted by his friends Nala, Pumbaa and Timon. On this path, Simba must figure out how to navigate loss, humility and forgiveness in order to take back what is rightfully his.
Showcasing Hans Zimmer’s Oscar-winning score, conducted by Sarah Hicks, the evening will feature classical musicians from the Chineke! Orchestra and the London Community Gospel Choir.
