Educate Yourself On Why "Black Lives Matter"
We recently heard about the criminal charges brought up against all the officers who were involved in the killing of George Floyd, it is great to feel some sort of justice has being served. In this particular instance - the men have been charged as criminals, police officers or not.
That said, today being a great day in the fight for understanding, racial equality and justice, it is important to state that the march carries on.
During the march in Hollywood, as I stood at an intersection, an older woman in her car pulled up and yelled “all lives matter”. I said: ‘Yes, all lives matter.’ Then asked her, “can you say ‘black lives matter,’ since all lives matter?” She couldn't. She repeated “all lives matter,” and that is the problem, the reason why we march today in 2020 - to raise our collective awareness towards the racial biases that black people face in civilised society.
In that moment I realised: if, as you stand today, you are unable to state out clearly, to another, that, ‘black lives matter’, then you too are a part of the problem.
Educate yourself on the experiences of black lives, to understand why, as black people, we don’t say “all lives matter”. We know that; we say “black lives matter” because society does not seem to understand what “all lives” means.
It is up to you to choose love and understanding. It is up to you to save yourself; we, the people, are marching and clearly informing you that we are moving in a particular direction. We are asking you to join the direction of evolution and progress. If you choose not to, then you will simply be left behind in the story of life.
