Sholay, Bollywood’s Enduring Classic, Makes Its In Concert World Premiere at the Royal Albert Hall

Music meets film as Bollywood classic, Sholay, makes its In Concert world premiere at the Royal Albert Hall.
Produced by Sippy Films and esk—regarded as one of Bollywood’s greatest movies, topping the British Film Institute’s “Top 10 Indian Films” of all time poll in 2002, the 1975 film blends action and adventure in a style that has been described as “dacoit Western”, making it the most famous of its kind to combine the conventions of Indian dacoit films with those of “spaghetti Westerns”—a term used to refer to movies made at the time by Italian directors. Now, more than five decades after its original release, Sholay is returning to the big screen in a new setting.
On Saturday 10 October, the film will make its Films in Concert world premiere at London’s Royal Albert Hall, with the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra performing R. D. Burman’s celebrated score live alongside the film, conducted by Melvin Tay. The film will be presented in Hindi with English subtitles on the Hall’s giant HD screen.
Directed by Sippy and featuring an all-star cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan, Sholay follows Jai and Veeru, two petty criminals hired by retired police officer Thakur Baldev Singh to capture the ruthless bandit Gabbar Singh. Drawing on Indian dacoit cinema and the conventions of the Western, the film created a visual and narrative language that remains instantly recognisable.
This screening will also present Sholay: The Final Cut, a recently restored 4K version incorporating the film’s original cut, including material banned by the Indian censor board upon its 1975 release. The restored version will only be available theatrically for the next couple of years.
Yet perhaps the most compelling reason to experience Sholay this way is its music. R. D. Burman’s score is inseparable from the film’s identity, and hearing it performed live by a full orchestra offers a new dimension to a soundtrack already embedded in popular culture.
Following the success of RRR in Concert at the Hall, Sholay in Concert offers another opportunity to experience Indian cinema through the intersection of film, music and live performance.
