Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’ Moment at an Inclusive Arts Festival
Music matters - it’s a global language that transcends barriers and has the potential to connect all. Last week, global superstar Ed Sheeran sparked joy and inspiration to young people with learning difficulties at the Royal Albert Hall. His special performance ignited a sing-and-sign rendition of his hit song, ‘Perfect’, as part of the West London Inclusive Arts Festival (WLIAF). It was an uplifting experience for all involved.
The memorable afternoon performance was the highlight of the WLIAF, which showcases arts performances by young people aged four to 19 with moderate to profound learning difficulties.
“What a pleasure it is to come and see the work everyone is doing here. It’s a real honour to be on stage with these guys,” Sheeran told the audience. During "Perfect," he encouraged the attendees to light up the room with their phone torches. Sheeran praised: “Everything that the teachers, carers, and students are doing here is amazing. Music is one of those things where everyone starts off at the same level, and the great thing about art is that there is no right or wrong.”
Stuart Whatmore, Head of the Tri-Borough Music Hub, a key festival partner, expressed his gratitude for Sheeran's participation. “What a total legend Ed is! He understands the importance of state school music education as a way of bringing music to everyone, regardless of their background or circumstance. Our enormous thanks go to him for joining us.”
Paul Morrow, Founder and Director of the WLIAF, shared his appreciation for Sheeran’s involvement. "We were delighted that Ed came to watch and perform with our young people today. Ed was also interested to hear how arts and culture can change lives and build community."
The WLIAF inspired the Cultural Inclusion Manifesto, developed in 2018 to address the lack of access to artistic opportunities for disabled children and young people. The festival is supported by John Lyon’s Charity.
